by Julia Saez - Angulo. Madrid
Cosmopolitan and versatile artist Joy Fahey originally from Manchester UK now lives in Marbella in the south of Spain where she has set up a studio and workshop. She is presently working on new paintings for an up and coming solo exhibition at the Gaudi Gallery in Madrid in May 2008.
Along side her own work Joy enjoys teaching groups and workshops that communicate her diverse and dynamic creative experience. She teaches realism, figurative, portrait and life drawing. Her Workshops warranted a program on the BBC's ‘Living in the Sun'.
The arts for her are a single trunk emanating from various branches. Joy Fahey extends her talents not only in the fine arts, but in dance, film, drama and psychology. All of this enriches her technique, her paintings, her way of looking at things, ultimately, her life, where she has spent time in the USA , Hong Kong , Australia , New Zealand , Japan and now Spain .
Works in oil, acrylic and mixed technique develop their chromatic abstractions which address the gesture and colour with freedom of stroke and execution. In her abstract painting one can track the strength of a concept or a feeling of power. The abstraction reflects above all the inner world of the artist who reflects on it all her intimate expression and gesture.
Whether on canvas or board, chromatics rich and bold, traps lights and contrasts. Reds streams that appear to emerge as figures or faces as mirages; green boscajes impossible mired in a dreamlike unreality. Red with white, green with ochre.
Fahey explores with pulse the gesture to domineer the chaos beyond the title of one of her paintings. Order and Chaos; Apollo and Dionysus. The teachings of Paul Klee and Jackson Pollock, among others, beats behind her creativity. The pictorial abstraction is sustained at the hands of the artist's ability to reveal a world through her work, as is the case with this author. The abstraction is always ambiguous, mysterious, and versatile and requires a pulse, a subtle balance so that they do not accrue to mere ornamentation.
Joy embodies a large optical depth created by the wise hand of the painter. The light and the mood are happy to wallow in the abstract canvases of this bold, colourful, impulsive and careful treatment of pigment through her brushstrokes or drippings.
Intense colourful abstractions that appear frequently in the large format that allows the works to expand with copper without any limits, the extension into a visual imaginary flight in space. The mind and the hand of Fahey with her dynamic and creative game, makes possible a chapter harmonious and renewed painting informalities, as a field of abstraction and gender standing in the art of pigment.
Painting is not dead, as prophesied in the 90's. Paintings transform in an endless sequence of the History of Art. The pictures of Joy Fahey are a return in the history of man that to be civilized, as it was pointed out by Goethe - there must be at least one memory from more than six thousand years ago. A century of wisdom that is manifested in the present renewed.
